Topic: "Honey Bee Health and Hygiene: Fiction, Fact, and Pheromones" presented by Kaira Wagoner, Ph.D. and Research Scientist at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro.
Dr. Wagoner will present her current research on a new tool for beekeepers that employs pheromones that trigger natural honey bee stress signals to enhance a social immune trait called “hygienic behavior” to combat the parasitic mite Varroa destructor. Hygienic behavior is the ability of adult honey bees to detect and remove unhealthy brood from the hive, improving the overall health of the colony.
